How to Plan Your Move to Singapore Without Stress: A Practical Timeline

Moving to Singapore involves more than just finding a property: it’s a series of decisions that can shape your overall experience. With the right approach and timeline, the process can feel far more structured and less overwhelming.

Note: This timeline assumes employment and work passes are already in progress or have been approved!

1. Lifestyle and Needs

4-6 Months before the move:
At this stage: Focus on understanding your lifestyle and needs.

  • Are you relocating with children?
  • Are you relocating with pets?
  • Preferred lifestyle: Convenience or quieter environment?

If possible, do some research and maybe even a pre-move trip to explore and shortlist neighbourhoods.

2. More Detailed Search

4-6 weeks before the move:

At this stage: Prepare for your home search in more detail.

Before actively browsing properties, consider:

  • 💸 Budget range
  • 🚎 Ideal commute time
  • 🏠 Preferred type of home (studio, 1 beds, 2 beds etc)
  • ✨ Furnished vs unfurnished

Begin narrowing down neighbourhoods:

  • Tanjong Pagar / CBD – for convenience and proximity to work
  • City fringe (River Valley, Novena) – for a balance of accessibility and lifestyle
  • East Coast – for a more relaxed pace and spacious living

If you’re unsure, look at our other blog titled ‘Central vs City-Fringe Living in Singapore: Where Should Expats Live?’ to go more in depth into what suits you.

Keep in mind: Online listings may look similar, but actual living experiences can vary significantly. At this stage, focus less on specific units, but on understanding your needs and preferences.

3. Short-Term Stays

2-3 Weeks before arrival: Planning your first stay

Most expats do not secure a long-term rental before arriving, and in many cases, it’s better not to.

At this stage: Your focus is to find a short-term stay:

  • Service apartments
  • Hotels

At the same time, start:

  • Shortlisting potential properties
  • Arranging for viewings for your first week in Singapore

This matters because: It’s impossible to capture the intangibles of the unit, physically being at the property allows you to judge whether the apartment is suitable for you.

4. Viewings and Exploration

Week 1 in Singapore: Viewings and exploration

At this stage: Focus on finding a home that fits your lifestyle.

Schedule multiple viewings across different areas - even beyond your initial shortlist.

During each viewing, consider the following:

  • What amenities (food, groceries, lifestyle options) are available nearby?
  • How does the area feel during the day - is it too crowded/ quiet, or does it feel comfortable and well-balanced?
  • Can you realistically see yourself living here comfortably on a day-to-day basis?

5. Securing the Right Property

Week 1-2: Securing the right property

Singapore’s rental market moves quick, especially for well-priced units.

At this stage: Be decisive, but clear.

Once you find a suitable property:

  • Submit a Letter Of Intent (LOI)
  • Negotiate key terms like rent and lease duration

6. Finalising the Lease

Week 2-3: Finalizing the lease

At this stage: Focus on understanding your agreement.

Carefully review the tenancy agreement and clarify:

  • Maintenance responsibilities
  • Minor repairs obligations

Tip: Take the time to understand the lease now to avoid issues later.

7. Move-In Week

Move in week

At this stage: Set up your essentials.

  • Utilities
  • WiFi

8. Settling Into Your New Apartment

First 2-4 Weeks of moving in: Settling into your new apartment

At this stage: Settle into your new routine.

  • Explore your neighborhood – walk around and get familiar
  • Test different commute routes to find what works best
